Learn Basic Spanish

If you are planning on doing business in Mexico, it is advisable to learn some basic Spanish.  Although you do not have to be fluent, Spanish will give you a higher level of confidence as well as a better experience.  At the very least, you should become familiar with real estate terminology and common social phrases and greetings.  To be on the safe side, always use the more formal usted, rather than the less formal tu.

If you are engaged in high level business dealings, seeking the services of an interpreter is highly recommended.  Some suggestions when working with an interpreter include:

  • Meeting with the interpreter before your first business event so that he may become accustomed to your style of communication, voice, and manner of expression
  • Review technical phrases and terminology that will likely occur during your business dealings
  • Brief the interpreter on any important nuances (professional standing of participants) and on the purpose of the meeting
  • Do not face the interpreter, but rather face the person you are addressing
  • Use short sentences for more accurate translations
  • Allow for more time or abbreviate presentations because everything take longer when everything needs to be translated
  • Avoid the use of slang or idiomatic expressions or the use of gestures as there may not be an equivalent translation or may be offensive
  • Keep in mind that humor may be misunderstoo
