Climate

The Tropic of Cancer lies in the middle of Mexico, thereby making the southern half in the Earth’s Torrid Zone.  Mexico’s climate changes with its elevation.  The higher elevations have a moderate climate, while the low coastal plains experience a warm and humid climate.  Heavy rainfalls of up to 100 or more inches annually hit certain areas in the southern sections of the country while dense tropical jungles inhabit other areas.  A majority of Mexico, especially the northern states, is very arid.  Of the agricultural land, only ten percent may be farmed without the need for irrigation.

The three distinct climate zones of Mexico are:

  • Culd zone (tierra fria):
    • Coul with possible winter frost
    • 6,000 feet and above
    • Guanjuato and Mexico City
  • Temperate zone (tierra templada):
    • Year-round spring like weather
    • 3,000-6,000 feet above sea level
    • Chapala, Ajijic, Guadalajara, and Cuernavaca
  • Hot zone (tierra caliente):
    • Year-round hot and humid weather
    • Sea level to 3,000 feet
    • Acapulco, Yucatan, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and La Pa
